Matt Borchert Announces Retirement as
Solano College Women’s Basketball Coach
FAIRFIELD, Calif. – Feb. 21, 2025 – Matt Borchert, the longest-tenured and winningest coach in Solano Community College women’s basketball history, announced his retirement as head women’s basketball coach effective immediately.
Borchert completed his 25th season in 2024-25 and finishes his storied Solano career with 449 wins, including 11 Bay Valley Conference titles. He was named Bay Valley Conference Coach of the Year six times. In 29 seasons of coaching junior college women’s basketball, he’s compiled an overall record of 483-374 (.564). While at Solano, his record was 449-268 (.626).
“I have been very fortunate to coach some amazing student-athletes and incredible women over the last two-plus decades,” said Borchert. “They have allowed us to continue the foundation of success that was laid long before I arrived at Solano. More importantly though have been the relationships that we have maintained with our alumni throughout the years.”
Lizzy Roark, Solano’s associate women’s basketball head coach for the past four seasons, has been named interim head coach.
Borchert arrived at Solano in the spring of 2000, serving as interim head coach for one season after the departure of Kim Mitchell-Gervasoni. He was elevated to full-time status after the 2000-01 season. He achieved immediate success – having never had a losing season and recording eight 20-win campaigns.
“Matt has made a lasting impact on both our women’s basketball program and the Solano community that will endure for years to come,” said Solano Athletic Director Erik Visser. “His leadership on the court resulted in 11 Bay Valley Conference titles and an overall record of 449 wins and 268 losses.
“Beyond wins and championships, Matt built a culture of excellence and service as his teams were deeply involved in the community, making a lasting impact beyond the basketball court. His commitment to developing student-athletes is evident in their academic achievement as the 2022-23 and 2023-24 teams ranked No. 2 nationally for team GPA by the WBCA; 58 players moved on to four-year schools and 10 who earned a place in the Solano College Athletic Hall of Fame.”
Prior to Solano, Borchert served as head women’s basketball coach at Gavilan College in Gilroy, Calif. (1995-99) and Hartnell College in Salinas, Calif. (1991-92) and assistant coach at Hartnell College (1991-92) and De Anza College in Cupertino, Calif. (1992-95, 1999-2000).
Some additional highlights from Borchert’s 25 years at Solano:
- No. 1 in the State: In Borchert’s first year, Solano found itself atop the state rankings early on in the season after winning the Chaffey Tournament and knocking off the preseason No. 1 team Mt. San Antonio College.
- No. 2 in the Nation: Academic achievement has been a priority for Borchert and his coaching staff. The 2022-23 and 2023-24 teams ranked No. 2 nationally for team GPA by the WBCA.
- Giving Back: Borchert’s teams have been very involved in the community. They participate in National Night Out annually and have volunteered with the Police Activities League fundraisers in Fairfield and Vacaville. They also hosted Girl Scout Night and Play4Kay games.
- Hall of Fame: 10 of Borchert’s former players are in the Solano College Athletic Hall of Fame.
- Postseason Honors: Borchert coached two first team all-state players, three second team all-state players, three third team all-state players and four Kodak All-American honorable mention selections.
- Moving On: Fifty-eight players have moved on to continue their basketball careers at four-year schools.
Borchert will transition into a new position within Solano’s kinesiology department as fitness center coordinator.
“I am looking forward to this next chapter and spending more time with my family,” he said.
